Get ahead of the marketing game this summer

As the weather hots up it can seem as if everyone else is on holiday, tempting you to ask why you’re not doing the same. Think again – especially if you’re a customer-facing business that enjoys heavy returns at Christmas time. Your customers’ holiday-related absence and the fact that the phone’s not ringing can leave you free to get your marketing ducks in a row, work on strategy and decide just how you’re going to tackle the challenges ahead so you can have your best Christmas yet. Come September, when it’s ‘back to skool’ for all of us, you’ll be ahead of the game.  

Christmas is sooner than you think!

If you’re a B2C facing business, Christmas can be one of the most significant times of the year. The National Retail Federation reports that for some retailers, the festive season can account for as much as 30% of their annual sales. Retailers in the hobby, toy and games sector rely on Christmas sales even more heavily.

If Christmas is vital to your business’s success, you need to start planning your seasonal strategy now. If you’re looking for publicity in magazines, such as ideal Christmas gift guides, many work to a lead time several months in advance – the adage that, in magazine world, Christmas comes in July is true! That’s one reason to start planning your seasonal marketing now.

While it may seem like reindeer and sleigh bells are a long way off, this is actually an ideal time to make sure you have all your marketing ducks lined up ready to hit the ground running once everyone is back from their summer holidays.  For many companies, it’s a comparatively quiet time; working on strategy now means more time to concentrate on other aspects of your business once the holidays are over. And this applies even if your business is not so seasonal; using this relative lull can put you ahead of your competitors come the autumn.
