The best way to stay relevant is to keep up to date on your industry news; following sector leaders will give you lots of new ideas to write about, no matter what industry you’re in, from new trends to changes in legislation. To help you keep on top of the things that really matter to you and your audiences, use an app that allows you to filter articles by industry or topic, such as Feedly, which gives you the ability to search for keywords, for example Finance or Health.
Do your customers ask you the same questions time and time again? That’s great! This tells you that this is exactly what they want to know about. If you know the answers, create a series of blogs answering these queries. This is also great for SEO (search engine optimisation) as chances are, if your customers are asking these questions, many more people will be searching for these answers.
Another great way you can find content is by searching through sites like Facebook and Twitter for keywords and trends. For example, type in something like #fashion and see what people are talking about. The topics that come up most are not only on trend, they’re also what your audiences are likely to want to find out about.
You can also use your competition to your advantage. What are they writing about and which posts are getting the most traction? Perhaps it’s time for you to create your own views on the subject, with an original twist that provides key information and demonstrates your knowledge of the sector. It’s important that you don’t copy content, or you will fall foul of plagiarism rules and your website will be blacklisted by the search engines, so take care to provide your own take on the subject.
The real challenge with writing to order, is that is very often when inspiration fails. So find a way to record content ideas when they strike you, so you don’t find yourself staring at a blank screen trying to remember what you were going to write about. Either carry a notebook or record ideas on your phone.
